Hunting
Published by Patrick at October 25th, 2009For many reasons our family are hunters and fishermen, we come from a long line of hunters and fishermen predating the Mayflower and we will probably have a long line after us also. Our children are taught from the youngest age about gun safety, correct use of various types of knives and animal ecology. They know that the purpose of hunting is to provide food for the table, management of the herds to keep the balance of food and consumer in check and to provide a time of fellowship and sharing within the group. It is not about the rack or trophy that some talk about. Those are side benefits, healthy bucks normally have healthy racks.
Planning for hunting is a year round activity in our house. Every camping trip or road trip includes stops to check for signs of animal activity, learning more about the flora and fauna of the area, finding trails and tracking the water and food patterns for the year. As we preserve food over the summer we create our “HUNTING PACKS” which include dried berries and nuts, dried apples and plums, spagetti sauce, chili sauce and sloppy joe mix.
Maps are gathered and poured over. Now that we are land hunting, every realtor page is checked for land either next to BLM and Forestry land or over 40 acres.
Join us and share your hunting stories. We also want your tips for simplifying the packing, organizing the camp kitchen, dressing for various types of hunt and what your favorite recipes are when in camp.
