Frugal Thanksgivings

The circus that the modern day Thanksgiving has become is far from the simple celebrations of earlier days. Yes there was feasting and sharing, but it was newly harvested food and it was often a community affair, similar to our church suppers and potlucks. It is possible to have a feast for 20 for about $30 with careful shopping and planning. We have an abundance of good food and leftovers. Part of the fun for us has been encouraging family members tobecome experts on certain menu items, including seeing how close to zero cost we can get!

If you watch the ads over the month before Thanksgiving you can usually find 10-20 lbs of potatoes for less than $2.  The berries for the crumble are ones we picked in August and froze in the crumbe pan lined with wax paper, broken in half and then put in a zip lock bag. Pecans we get at a farmers market from one of our local nut growers,
